New report shows public concern over data protection is growing

by Josef Kafka

In the past few years, some of the biggest scandals to hit the news have involved data security, such as Edward Snowden’s NSA revelations, celebrity nude leaks, and data leaks from high profile businesses like British Airways. This has led to a heightened awareness of data protection issues among members of the British public, and a lack of trust in the companies tasked with keeping personal information private.

A recent survey conducted by YouGov found that 72% of British adults are worried about the security risks of their private information being stored online. They are concerned about the possibility of leaks or hackers accessing the data. Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 32% felt strongly enough that they were willing to pay for extra online security measures, while 29% saw keeping their data protected as their own responsibility. This is a new development that shows just how seriously businesses have lost public trust when it comes to data security.

The digital revolution has put internet users in a strange position. They are asked to provide personal information constantly, whether it’s signing up for a social network, making purchases online or using internet banking services. Even simply browsing the web involves giving out personal information in the form of cookies. These activities are all part of modern life, and can provide great rewards of convenience and enjoyment, but users must sacrifice the control of their personal data in return for access. Those who choose not to provide this information are left with no option but to miss out.

Taking extra data security measures allows internet users to make the most of what the online world can offer, while doing the best they can to keep their personal data private. They should research which companies have the best track record in data protection, especially in situations such as online banking and social media where a great deal of valuable information is saved digitally. Businesses should also take on the responsibility of keeping their customer and client data secure, recognising the fact that this issue is of growing importance to the British people.
