Technology and networks bring people together in The Continuum

by Josef Kafka

There are lots of articles out there asking about what the next big thing emerging from the science and technology industry will be. Will it be a truly smart city, with people living in smart homes, driving (or sitting in) smart cars, with routes chosen by smart traffic systems? Then, there are smart hospitals, where artificially intelligent machines will diagnose us. Robots will perform surgery and drugs, while laundry and even patients will be moved around by automated drones. Following on from that, there's the micro-worlds of nanoparticles for better clothing, housing and medicine, smart drugs and food.

The reality is, it isn't a matter of which one comes next. They are all happening at the same time, and are being pushed into our lives by our desire for technology, both in industry and the consumer world. Businesses need these evolutionary steps and revolutions to sell new products, while the buying industries and consumers need them to save money and reduce reliance on old methods.

So, rather than our modern lives advancing through a stream of one-by-one inventions, all these new things will overlap, using smartness, networking and technology to fit neatly into our lives. All this is thanks to the huge volume of science being researched, and with so many advances being made, we are approaching a new era of rapid and constant progression, sometimes called The Continuum.

If the internet was phase one of The Continuum, and smart machines and mobile devices are phase two, then phase three is where everything talks to every other thing – way beyond an Internet of Things, but into the era of an network of everything.

Speed is everything in the new world

This is a world where quantum computing does years of maths in seconds, where the results of a new discovery can be 3D printed in hours, rather than months, and the results spread around the world, and sold and packaged within days rather than a year. Business will be done at speeds frightening by today's standards, and will make the efforts of recent decades appear like the Stone Age.

Whatever a product from the age of The Continuum is, we will learn about it through most steps of its development, such is the popularisation of business and science and our demand for knowledge. That item or product will be heavily marketed to all well before launch. That's because the next invention will come along so quickly that the window of opportunity for each will be tiny. And with media companies either buying or being owned by the science or manufacturing companies, they will be advertising or writing editorial about each one as if it really is the next big thing, rapidly followed by the next, and then the next.

Similarly, when your new gadget arrives, the next one will already be on the production line, in a line of constant production evolution. In many cases, improvements will be in software, so that everything we own is being constantly upgraded to the latest version. Get ready for The Continuum – it will be quite the ride.
